Getting Started
What is Boardlytics?+
Boardlytics is a board game session tracker. Log your game nights, track scores and stats across players, manage groups, and unlock AI-powered insights on the Pro plan.
How do I log a session?+
Go to Sessions → New Session. Pick a game, add players, enter scores, and save. For group game nights, create a group first — players can join via QR code and enter their own scores in real time.
What's the difference between a personal session and a group session?+
Personal sessions are logged by you after the fact — great for recording past games. Group sessions are live: create one, share the QR code, and everyone joins on their phone to submit scores as you play.
Games & Library
How do I add games to my library?+
Go to Games → Add. Search BoardGameGeek to find the game and pull in cover art and player counts automatically. You can also scan the barcode on the box to add it instantly, or import your entire owned collection from BGG in one step.
How does barcode scanning work?+
On the Add Game page, tap the barcode icon next to the search box. Point your camera at the barcode on the back of the game box and hold steady — it scans automatically. If the game is already in the catalog it's added to your library in one tap. If not, Boardlytics looks it up on BoardGameGeek and shows a confirm screen before adding.
How does Import from BGG work?+
Go to Games → Import from BGG and enter any BGG username. Boardlytics fetches all games marked as Owned in that collection and adds them to your library. Only owned games are imported — wishlist and played-only entries are skipped.
Can I import from someone else's BGG account?+
Yes — BGG collections are public. Enter any username to import their owned games into your library. This is useful if a family member or friend manages your household's BGG account.
Can I run the BGG import more than once?+
Yes. The import is additive and safe to repeat — games already in your library are skipped, and only net-new games are added. Run it again any time you've added games to your BGG collection.
Why are imported games marked as Competitive?+
BGG's collection API doesn't include game-type data, so all imported games default to Competitive. You can edit any game individually to change it to Cooperative.
What does "Price paid" mean on a game?+
It's the price you personally paid for that game — whatever you entered when you added it to your library. Each member of a group can record their own cost, so your number is private to you. You can add or update it at any time from the game's detail page.
What is $/play?+
$/play is your cost divided by the number of sessions you've logged for that game. It tells you how much you've paid per play — the more you play, the lower it gets. It only appears on the game detail page once you've both set a cost and logged at least one session.
What is POI (Play-on-Investment)?+
POI is a Boardlytics metric that shows how many plays you've gotten for every dollar spent on your game collection. A POI of 4.2× means you've averaged 4.2 sessions per dollar invested. The higher your POI, the more value you've extracted from your shelf. It improves automatically every time you log a session.
How is Library Spend calculated?+
Library Spend is the total of all costs you've recorded across your game library. Only games where you've entered a price are included — games without a recorded cost are excluded from all investment metrics.
What is Avg $/play on the dashboard?+
Average cost per play is your total library spend divided by your total logged sessions across all priced games. Lower is better. A brand-new game starts expensive; the metric improves with every play.
What counts as "Most unplayed"?+
The game in your library with the highest cost-per-play (at least one logged session and a recorded cost). It's a gentle reminder of which game deserves more table time relative to what you paid for it.
Sessions & Scoring
Can I edit a session after I save it?+
Yes — completed sessions can be edited by the session owner at any time. Open the session and tap Edit. Active group sessions cannot be edited while the game is in progress.
How do placements work?+
Placements are calculated automatically from scores (highest score = 1st). Ties share the same placement. For cooperative games, placements don't apply — you record a team win or loss instead.
What is Snap-to-Score?+
Snap-to-Score lets you photograph a score sheet and have AI read the scores for you. Free plan: 3 snaps/day. Pro: unlimited.
Groups
How do I invite people to a group?+
Open the group and tap the QR icon to show a join link and QR code. Anyone who scans it (or visits the link) will be added to the group after creating an account.
Who can start and complete a group session?+
Only group admins can start and complete sessions. Any group member can submit their own score once the game is in progress.
AI Features (Pro)
What AI features are included in Pro?+
Pro includes: AI Game Night Recommendation, post-game narrative recaps, achievement badges for each player, Nemesis/Rivalry insights (who you win and lose against most), and Rules Referee in the Playbook (ask questions about any game's rules).
What is AI Game Night Recommendation?+
Found on the New Session page, it suggests which games to play based on who's coming tonight and how much time you have. It uses your play history — win rates, how long since you last played each game, average session length — to give a ranked list of 3–5 games with a one-sentence reason for each. Free plan shows the top pick; Pro shows the full list with AI reasoning.
How does AI Game Night Recommendation decide what to suggest?+
It looks at games in your library that fit tonight's player count, then ranks them using signals like: how long since you last played (prefers games with a longer gap), whether the field is competitive (avoids games where one person dominates), and how the game length fits your available time. The more sessions you log, the better the suggestions get.
How long does it take for the session recap and achievements to appear?+
They're generated automatically when a session is completed and usually appear within 10–15 seconds. Refresh the session page if they haven't shown up after 30 seconds.
What data is sent to AI services?+
Only session-level data: game name, player names, scores, and your notes. No account or payment information is ever sent. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
